As the longest relationship documented on Teen Mom, Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra have been through ups, downs, and everything in between together. The pair have been inseparable since meeting in the 7th grade and were featured on 16 & Pregnant as high school juniors in 2009. In one of the most heartwrenching episodes across all seasons of the show and its spin-offs, Catelynn and Tyler, who both came from unstable families in Michigan, decided to put their child up for adoption to give her a better life. Upon giving birth, adoptive parents Brandon and Theresa named the baby Carly Elizabeth; cameras documented Catelynn and Tyler handing off their daughter and signing the adoption paperwork, as well as how the decision affected their relationship moving forward.
Since their first appearance on MTV, Catelynn and Tyler have continued to appear as main cast members on Teen Mom, later renamed Teen Mom OG after the premiere of Teen Mom 2. Throughout the nine seasons, viewers have seen the pair get married and have several more children, all daughters. Tying the knot in 2015 with the other Teen Mom stars in attendance, Catelynn and Tyler are parents to Novalee, 7, Vaeda, 3, and Rya, who was born last August. Despite being together for more than half of their lives, the couple appears more in love than ever. Frequently posting photos and videos of each other on social media, Catelynn and Tyler clearly have true feelings for each other. That being said, however, many believe that their public displays of affection are more embarrassing than endearing.
While social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok are popular public avenues of self-expression, many think that Catelynn and Tyler unabashedly post things that are either better left unsaid, or should be expressed in private. A recent TikTok by Catelynn on March 14, for example, features a slideshow of Tyler and their children set to the song “Glad You Came” by The Wanted. The implied innuendo was not missed by Teen Mom fans on Reddit, who branded the video “trashy,” “weird,” “gross,” and even downright creepy. This is not the first time Catelynn has left what fans consider to be obnoxious and over-the-top comments; in a now-deleted Instagram post, Teen Mom 2 star Kailyn Lowry advertised Tyler’s upcoming appearance on her podcast. Commenting “Dammnnnnnn my man be sexy as HELL!” the same Reddit users quickly called out the statement for being “cringey,” “embarrassing,” and unnecessary.
Catelynn isn’t the only Baltierra whose words fall under scrutiny, as Tyler’s creative outlet of writing poetry has been met with more eye rolls than head-nods from fans. While writing is definitely subjective, many Teen Mom fans believe that the 30-year-old simply tries too hard to get a message across; in addition, the usual lack of rhyme scheme or sensible flow throws users off. These poems have been a hot topic of discussion among message boards for years, especially after Tyler pondered releasing a book of his work. For Catelynn’s 30th birthday, which was March 12, Tyler uploaded his most recent poem in an Instagram tribute. With lines like, “I want to get lost in your arms & live in the stars / Surfing the galaxy & surviving on dreams,” a Teen Mom Reddit thread wished Catelynn a happy birthday and complimented her new purple hair, but quickly condemned Tyler’s caption as a poor Shakespearean attempt.
Catelynn and Tyler aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the constant love and affection they have for each other is commendable in its own right. Most couples who become an item as early teenagers don’t make it to their mid-20s since that is when people change the most, but these two have defied the odds. With the most recent spin-off of Teen Mom recently over, Teen Mom: Family Reunion will be back for a second season. While the Baltierra’s weren’t on the show, it’s entirely possible that viewers will catch them on television once more.
