A street outside Madison Square Garden has been named in honor of Muhammad Ali.
A city worker put up the sign for Muhammad Ali Way on Tuesday after Mayor de Blasio said West 33rd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues would be renamed for the legendary boxer, although only temporarily.
“Muhammad Ali was a champion, activist and the self-proclaimed Greatest,” de Blasio said. “Throughout his life, he lived up to that title again and again — and today, we are paying tribute to the man in the heart of this city.”
The Garden hosted some of Ali’s greatest fights, including the “Fight of the Century” against Joe Frazier in 1971.
The three-time world heavyweight champion died of septic shock “due to unspecified natural causes” last Friday night at the age of 74.
