Getting candid.
Bachelor Nation fans saw Kat Izzo and John Henry Spurlock find love and get engaged on Season 9 of “Bachelor in Paradise” last summer.
The two eventually announced their split shortly after the show ,and now John Henry is opening up about why their love story was cut short.
The Bachelor Nation star was a guest on the “Almost Famous” podcast, where he revealed the “long story” of why he and Kat didn’t work out.
John Henry discussed his career as a commercial diver and underwater welder, which he promised himself he’d do for 10 years before prioritizing a relationship, but his engagement to Kat changed those plans.
He told co-hosts Ashley Iaconetti and Ben Higgins that he moved around a lot for work and added, “I told her, as of right now, my career is not relationship friendly. She knew that. But I was like, my plan is to get out of it anyways.”
After they got engaged on the show, Kat decided to move to North Carolina so she could be closer to John Henry, but that she eventually wanted to live in California.

John continued on, sharing, “Things were going really well. Now, I have this job and then I get in this relationship. Then now it’s like, OK, I have to start figuring out what I’m going to do, how I’m going to make this transition to a career that is going to be a lot easier for me and her to work with. It just caught me by surprise. Now I’m starting to stress out about how I’m going to make this move.”
He said as he started to think about what came next for him and Kat, he started to have doubts and notice their differences more, which got “really hard” for him.
The diver said, “It got to a point where it was just extremely hard for the both of us. Then basically, I called it quits. I said, this doesn’t feel right. I think this should be a lot easier than what it is, and it just, it wasn’t the case. I just started thinking to myself, maybe this just isn’t for me. Once I got that in my head, it just kind of spiraled from there.”
John Henry said that Kat was caught off guard by the split and that his mental health also wasn’t in a good place during this time.
Despite their breakup, he said he and Kat are still on good terms and only has positive things to say about her.
He shared, “Kat is amazing. She really is something special. She’s not my longest relationship, but Kat’s a catch. I’ll tell you, she definitely did her part. Distance is hard for everybody. When she loves, she gives it her all, and she did everything that she needed to do and then some in order to try to make our relationship work.”
