The team already added one with the\u00a0Gardner Minshew\u00a0signing but is likely to add at least one more player to the position group.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.lasvegassun.com\/media\/img\/photos\/2023\/10\/15\/20231015_RAIDERS_VS_PATRIOTS_selects_WV_011_t600.jpg?42b0fb247f69dabe2ae440581a34634cbc5420f3\" alt=\"Aidan O'Connell 'ready for his opportunity' as Raiders' new QB - Las Vegas  Sun News\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Aidan O\u2019Connell\u00a0started 10 games for the Raiders last season but the team hasn\u2019t indicated that they plan for him to be the long-term starter. For his part, O\u2019Connell isn\u2019t offended by the team adding quarterbacks. He welcomes the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had to compete my whole life, and I wouldn\u2019t want it any other way,\u201d O\u2019Connell told The Athletic\u2019s Vic Tafur in an\u00a0April 11 interview. \u201cThe NFL is the best of the best, and you have to earn everything every year. That\u2019s the way it should be. It\u2019s my job to keep my job. It doesn\u2019t really matter who they bring in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connell has a leg up over a potential rookie and Minshew considering he was with the team last season. Head coach\u00a0Antonio Pierce is a fan\u00a0of the quarterback and was the reason the team didn\u2019t make a change during the season when O\u2019Connell was struggling. His accuracy was a bit erratic but that should be improved as he gets more experience. The biggest problem facing O\u2019Connell is his lack of mobility.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s slow and not particularly elusive in the pocket, which led to several easy sacks last season. O\u2019Connell knows that he\u2019s not going to get substantially faster but that\u2019s not stopping him from working on his mobility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job is to get the ball to our talented playmakers, and that can mean sliding over and buying yourself a couple of seconds,\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cThe NFL game is extremely fast, and I have to be quick with my decision-making and getting the ball out. And while I am not going to win any foot races, I have to be able to get a couple of yards for a first down if the opportunity presents itself. You do whatever you have to, to make a play and win a game, and that\u2019s how we approach training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even\u00a0Patrick Mahomes\u00a0isn\u2019t particularly fast but he consistently makes defenders miss with how elusive he is. Even if they do, they\u2019ll still need to earn the starting spot. Aidan O\u2019Connell still has a chance to be the starter next season and isn\u2019t taking his foot off the gas, according to his personal quarterback coach Jeff Christensen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always worked hard to have great mechanics and his accuracy is elite,\u201d Christensen told Vic Tafur. \u201cThe one I don\u2019t think people talked enough about last season was that he threw a really nice deep ball.
