In an interview with\u00a0EW<\/em>,\u00a0Colton revealed that neither competing as Lovebird in\u00a0The Masked Singer\u00a0<\/em>season 11 nor starring as the lead of\u00a0The Bachelor\u00a0<\/em>season 23 was more intimidating<\/strong>, but rather they were simply different from each other. He explained,\u00a0“I just think it’s different phases and different times in your life.”<\/em>\u00a0He said,\u00a0“You get experience and you mature and you grow up and you sort of do it all in front of the public.”<\/em> Colton concluded by saying that there are different fears at various times in people’s lives, depending on what they’re going through.<\/p>\n

Colton, who came out as gay on April 14, 2021, shared,\u00a0“I definitely think there’s a time and a place for a queer dating show. I think it’s time.”\u00a0<\/em>He said that he’s\u00a0“had talks”\u00a0<\/em>with some of\u00a0The Bachelor<\/em>\u00a0producers<\/strong>, but he thinks that there are\u00a0“so many other incredible dating shows that might even be more well-equipped format-wise.”<\/em>\u00a0He mentioned\u00a0Love Is Blind<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Ultimatum<\/em>, both of which had LGBTQ+ seasons. Colton explained that the\u00a0Bachelor<\/em>\u00a0format is\u00a0“tricky and it’s hard. Our community is so diverse and we play by different rules and I mean that with all the love and respect.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Colton has had a difficult yet inspiring reality television journey. When he appeared on\u00a0The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Bachelor<\/em>, he was hiding who he really was. He’s now competed on both\u00a0Beyond the Edge,\u00a0<\/em>which he won, and\u00a0The Masked Singer<\/em>\u00a0season 11, appearing free and joyous as his true self. As Lovebird, Colton was able to spread his wings and fly. When he was unmasked, he said that he spent his whole life working as a football player, and\u00a0The Masked Singer<\/em>\u00a0gave him the opportunity to explore the arts, music, and theatre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Colton is correct that it’s time for\u00a0The Bachelor<\/em>\u00a0to have an LGBTQ+ season<\/strong>, but he’s also right to be skeptical of the franchise’s ability to handle it. Although having LGBTQ+ seasons of other reality dating shows such as\u00a0Love Is Blind<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Ultimatum<\/em>\u00a0is important for representation, those shows don’t have the same cultural significance as\u00a0The Bachelor<\/em>.
