ABC is releasing new footage from\u00a0Gerry Turner<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Theresa Nist<\/strong>\u2018s breakup interview.<\/p>\n

When they announced their split on\u00a0Good Morning America\u00a0<\/em>on Friday, April 12,\u00a0Juju Chang<\/strong>\u00a0teased more to come from her chat with the pair on\u00a0Nightline<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you say to the nerdy love people like me who think, \u2018love will find a way.\u2019 How do you give up after three months?\u201d Chang asked Gerry, 72, and Theresa, 70, in the longer version of the interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think maybe it\u2019s part of the fact that we are older and we do have homes and we do have children and we do have grandchildren \u2013 and I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s impossible [that] the love can\u2019t overcome that, but it did play a major role,\u201d Theresa replied.<\/p>\n

Chang later asked if the couple considered a \u201ccommuter marriage,\u201d to which Theresa brought up their age again.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we\u2019re older we wanted it immediately [to] be together,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re young you got the time to be in a commuter marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gerry added, \u201cWe didn\u2019t see it as an option.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair said that they started talking about a divorce \u201cabout three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had some really good conversations, probably the most honest conversations we\u2019d had,\u201d Gerry said. \u201cIt was like the lightbulb went off that we were of the same mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Theresa noted, \u201cThere wasn\u2019t any fighting. It was a very gentle conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The duo added that they saw a couples counselor who helped them navigate the decision. \u201cI think it was very useful,\u201d Gerry said.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Golden Bachelor<\/em>\u00a0couple\u00a0fell in love during the inaugural season\u00a0of the\u00a0Bachelor<\/em>\u00a0spinoff. Theresa accepted a proposal from Gerry during the show\u2019s finale in September 2023.<\/p>\n

The pair then tied the knot in a televised wedding in January but had not officially moved in together following their nuptials.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month,\u00a0TMZ<\/em>\u00a0reported that Gerry had been living at his lake house in Indiana, while Theresa was still at home in her native New Jersey.<\/p>\n

Us Weekly<\/em>\u00a0learned on April 1 that Gerry and Theresa had\u00a0no immediate plans to change\u00a0their living situation. An insider told\u00a0Us<\/em> that Theresa\u2019s job as a senior compliance officer was keeping her in New Jersey, noting that the duo was visiting each other often as they navigated their long-distance relationship.<\/p>\n

The distance ultimately\u00a0played a part in their split. \u201cTheresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations,\u201d Gerry told the audience during his and Theresa\u2019s\u00a0GMA<\/em>\u00a0appearance on Friday. \u201cWe\u2019ve looked closely at our living situations and we\u2019ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it\u2019s time for us to dissolve our marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that the pair\u2019s dedication to\u00a0their respective families\u00a0\u2014 Gerry and Theresa each have two children and multiple grandchildren \u2014 outweighed their love.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we just feel like it\u2019s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart,\u201d Gerry said. \u201cI still love this person, there\u2019s no doubt in my mind. I root for her every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Us<\/em>\u00a0exclusively confirmed on Friday that\u00a0Gerry filed for divorce in Petersburg, Indiana. He cited \u201cirretrievable breakdown\u201d as the reason for the dissolution of their union.<\/p>\n

Gerry and Theresa have\u00a0a prenuptial agreement, which they plan to honor. The twosome will also return their Neil Lane wedding and engagement rings in accordance to the\u00a0Golden Bachelor\u00a0<\/em>contractual stipulations.<\/p>\n

Both Gerry and Theresa were previously married. Gerry wed his high school sweetheart,\u00a0Toni<\/strong>, and they were together 43 years before she passed away in 2017.<\/p>\n
