He had 3,006 receiving yards combined from 2019 to 2021 and set the\u00a0team\u2019s franchise record\u00a0for catches with 107 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/_9nKRg4qYs_8MW3RKF.uEw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTY0MDtoPTQyNw--\/https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/os\/creatr-uploaded-images\/2022-08\/0632b600-311e-11ed-bec6-a21b8324c38a\" alt=\"NFL 2022: Raiders TE Darren Waller signs gets three-year, $51 million  extension - Yahoo Sports\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Waller\u2019s one season with McDaniels, he saw a sharp decline in production. He played just nine games and caught 28 passes for 388 yards. This led to the team trading him away to the\u00a0New York Giants\u00a0last offseason. Waller had a chance to give his thoughts on McDaniels and acknowledged that he has a strong football mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah \u2026 Josh McDaniels knows ball,\u201d Waller told Vic Tafur of The Athletic in an\u00a0April 9 interview. \u201cThat hasn\u2019t been his problem. He taught me a lot, like on return routes, having the toe perpendicular to the line of scrimmage. Plus, the depth and the detail on routes \u2014 that culture that he came from in New England is very detailed, and I took a lot from the passing game that they were installing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This echoes what other current and former Raiders players\u00a0have said about McDaniels. He clearly has a strong grasp of the game of football but simply couldn\u2019t figure out how to have success with the other aspects of being a head coach.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Darren Waller Laments Josh McDaniels Getting Fired<\/h2>\n<p>There was some obvious turbulence between Darren Waller and Josh McDaniels\u2019 staff. Waller\u2019s injury issues were a\u00a0source of frustration\u00a0and the tight end didn\u2019t appreciate the coach letting his\u00a0wedding date slip\u00a0to the media.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the rocky relationship, Waller feels bad for how things ended with McDaniels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing is ever as bad as it seems,\u201d Waller said. \u201cI saw good things in Josh McDaniels and you hate to see people not succeed in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coach was fired before finishing his second season with the Raiders and didn\u2019t land another job this offseason. He\u2019s been dealing with nagging injuries for three straight seasons now. This has led to him\u00a0contemplating retirement\u00a0this offseason.<\/p>\n<p>While retirement is still an option for Waller, he\u2019s still taking his time and hasn\u2019t made a final decision yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to make a decision at some point,\u201d Waller said. \u201cYou have to be 100 percent bought in, for the grind. And I have to make sure I am bringing that to the table, or it\u2019s a disservice to the guys I am suiting up with. I also want to give the team time, where whichever way I go, they can prepare for next season. So \u2026 it\u2019s a little bit of a difficult decision, but here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waller is only 31 and should have a couple of years left as a productive player if he can stay healthy.
