American Woman<\/em><\/h2>\nAlicia Silverstone spoke to\u00a0As If\u00a0magazine\u00a0about what it was like to play a fictionalized version of Kyle’s mom, Kathleen, in the series.<\/p>\n
“I wasn\u2019t familiar with\u00a0Real Housewives of Beverly Hills<\/em>, so I didn\u2019t know who she was. What I did know going into that room was the show was about a woman\u2019s mother who was very eccentric. The stories I was told about this woman sounded fantastic and very wild, and for her time she was a trailblazer in how she handled things alone, which women did not do in the 70s. Back then, a woman couldn\u2019t get a loan out on a house in her own name, she needed to get a man involved. I just love the line in the pilot where my character says to her husband, ‘if you would just give me a little bit of money, I wouldn\u2019t have to ask you all the time.’ She was entirely dependent on him.”<\/p>\nThe series tracked Bonnie’s evolution after she leaves her husband and embarks on a journey of self discovery and navigating being a single mom. When speaking to\u00a0As If,\u00a0<\/em>Alicia addressed playing a complicated fictional person based on an equally-complicated real person.<\/p>\n“What I find interesting about this character is Kyle loves her mom. When you talk to her, there\u2019s no sense of damage done, which is kind of bazaar to me. She has such love for her mother,” Alicia said in the interview. “[She was] terrified of embarking on this new life as a single mother. When I was in this meeting, I wondered when I would have to start my tap dance. When do I need to convince them that I am the best person for this part? I cried when I left the meeting because I knew I got the job!”<\/p>\n
The series also starred\u00a0Mena Suvari,\u00a0Cheyenne Jackson, and\u00a0James Tupper.<\/p>\n
Were Kathy Hilton and Kim Richards involved in\u00a0American Woman?<\/em><\/h2>\nKyle previously confirmed her older sisters,\u00a0Kathy Hilton\u00a0and\u00a0Kim Richards,\u00a0were not involved in the project, which caused some friction within the family.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think my sisters really understood what it was in the beginning,\u201d she told\u00a0The Daily Dish.\u00a0\u201cI was like, \u2018It\u2019s not a reality show, it\u2019s a scripted show inspired by [our childhood].\u2019\u00a0The first announcement said it was a dark comedy, which kind of implied it could be sketchy or something. There\u2019s moments, obviously\u2026 I didn\u2019t have a traditional upbringing, which is very obvious in the show. But you know, it\u2019s just going to be a fun show. I\u2019m not here to torture anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the\u00a0RHOBH\u00a0Season 8 reunion, Kyle admitted she and Kathy were still \u201cnot great\u201d and it was largely due to\u00a0American Woman. When asked if she and Kathy were on speaking terms with Kathy, Kyle\u00a0told\u00a0Andy Cohen:\u00a0\u201cHonestly, not right now, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m looking forward to her seeing\u00a0American Woman, because I think she\u2019s gonna look and say, \u2018I read the situation wrong,\u2019 and then we\u2019ll go from there.\u201d<\/p>\n
About two months after\u00a0the\u00a0American Woman\u00a0premiere\u00a0(June 2018), Kim insisted she and\u00a0Kyle were on \u201cgood\u201d terms. However, there was still some tension between Kyle and Kathy, who expressed her objections in\u00a0RHOBH\u00a0Season 11 Episode 14.<\/p>\n
“It really put mom in such a bad, bad light,” Kathy told Kyle about the series. “I just wouldn’t do that without talking to you.”<\/p>\n
Kyle insisted\u00a0American Woman\u00a0was a “love letter” to their mom and was not biographical. “If it was a real story about mom and us, I wouldn’t have done it, but it wasn’t,” Kyle replied. “I liked the idea of something in the ’70s and seeing a single mom and how they didn’t know how to navigate, you know, without their husband.”<\/p>\n
Although Kathy and Kyle would endure several ups and downs in the following years, they appear to be\u00a0in a much better place\u00a0these days.<\/p>\n
American Woman<\/em>\u00a0gets canceled after one season<\/h2>\nAmerican Woman\u00a0was canceled in the summer\u00a0of 2018, just two weeks after its Season 1 finale.\u00a0Kyle announced the news\u00a0via X (previously Twitter):\u00a0\u201cYou guys \u2026 your comments are so nice and supportive. I can\u2019t thank you enough,\u201d\u00a0she wrote.\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019ve made me feel even more proud of the show we made. It makes me happy knowing you came on this journey with me and ended up loving [American Woman].\u201d<\/p>\n
She\u00a0expanded on the cancelation\u00a0in an Instagram post and expressed hope the show would continue on another network (it did not).<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you so much for watching [American Woman] and for all your support,\u201d\u00a0she wrote. \u201cAll of you have been so supportive and cheered me on and I am so appreciative.\u00a0I\u2019m so proud of the show we made and am so grateful for the talented team of people it took to create it. While it’s been over 20 years since Kathleen Richards\u00a0died of breast cancer in 2002, she remains\u00a0an important figure in Kyle’s life.\u00a0While appearing on the March 27 episode of the\u00a0Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa\u00a0podcast, Kyle opened up about her childhood and her relationship with her mom, Kathleen. During the conversation,\u00a0she shared how her daughters’ bond\u00a0is very different than the one she developed with her siblings, \u00a0Kathy Hilton\u00a0and\u00a0Kim Richards,\u00a0as a child, mostly due to the choices her mom made while raising them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey [my daughters] could not be more different than my sisters and me,\u201d she said on the podcast.
